The Ruger Mini-14 is a great design Bargain at initial price of $195 Very good price ($450) in 1990 when I bought my first mini-30 Still good price ($600) when I bought my second mini-30 in 2008 Second gun is much improved At today's price it seems expensive, yet the market price for a new Ruger Mini has not kept up with inflation

I put a Bushnell 1-6 x 24 on a mini 14 Illuminated reticle is pretty sharp, glass is pretty clear, good controls Seems pretty solid so far I’ve had it out in the really cold and snowy and in the really hot and dusty $200 and some Nobody from Seal team 6 is using one, but I probably won’t be sneaking up on Al Qaeda HQ any time soon

I just bought a new ranch rifle that has the metal handguard, but I like the look of the older mini 14s with the wooden handguard Does anyone know where you can get an after market wooden handguard that will fit the newer mini 14? Will the old mini 14 handguards fit on a newer rifles?

Of the options given, I would suggest the mini-14 The 10 22 is a good little gun, and definitely better than a sharp stick, but the 223 is a much better fighting caliber You could get a mini-30, if you want a rifle in 7 62x39 I think they also made one in 300BO, but those are probably pretty tough to track down

The biggest down fall of the mini 14 is spare parts You have to send them to a Ruger dealer or the factory to get parts AR-15 parts are everywhere as are ak-47 parts Also they are not really a mini Garrand as many people thin k they are They have failed miserably in combat testing In all fairness the mini -14 is a good camp gun and will do in pinch as a defensive weapon I would not bet
