the standards are for more than just speed, yeah speed is a factor but the consistency is not just a byproduct, in fact if you go and read some of the old rules for old encodes like xvid etc there were specific notes about encode settings so that they would play on most standard DVD players or fit on specific CD-R or DVD-R media
