I encourage english speakers who haven't, to learn some Dutch (just a little bit); you'll find it to be jokingly easy and realize (appreciate) its proximity to your own language - German is a whole different story

I am a native English speaker, and have been trying to decide which language would be the best to learn I have been contemplating between Spanish, German, Dutch, and Russian

Afrikaans is closer to Dutch than Quebec French is to French I don't know about Swedish, Danish and Norwegian but I do know Afrikaans people can read Dutch newspapers and vice versa without problems If you speak standard formal Afrikaans and standard formal Dutch, people can understand each other perfectly fine

Dutch ortography is stupid and ugly like this language itself That's the reason why other languages don't have so many consecutive vowels

In my opinion, the reason why so many Dutch people speak good English (and German) is because their own linguistic territory is so small I mean, apart from the Netherlands, Belgium is the only other European country where Dutch is spoken (actually, only the Northern part of Belgium)

Dutch is not a particularly difficult language to learn, the grammar is pretty simple, the pronunciation isn't too hard either and if you already know English, it'll be a lot easier for you to understand However, I don't really think Dutch is a more useful language than Swedish, unless you want to live in the Netherlands or in Flanders

Dutch actually takes a central place among Germanic languages Its vocabulary is closest to Old English, is of course in tight relation to German, but features also a number of words only found in Scandinavian tongues

Afrikaans is easier than Dutch because it's grammar simplified Dutch is more complicated Once you can speak and write Dutch you will be able to read Afrikaans newspapers and will be able to have a conversation with an Afrikaans person if you speak slow As for which one sound better, it up to you to decide which one sounds nicer

For me, neither German nor Dutch seem to help with Frisian, as Frisian is in a class all its own (well, actually, with English and Scots) Old English really doesn't help either, because Frisian has modernized like English In fact, if you speak English, or better, Scots, then that is probably the best first step in approaching Frisian
